Atomic Infamous: Mt. Hood

This past July, Atomic Skis' Infamous Squad gathered at Mt. Hood for a week of photo and video shooting, and I was invited to contribute my behind-the-lens skills for the occasion. The crew was stacked: skier-philosopher and style guru Nicky Keefer; Level 1 Productions Superunknown contest winner Mitchell Brower; Swedish wunderkind Lucas Stål-Madison; Nick Meilleur and SoulRyders' Jacob Callaghan on video; me and Darcy Bacha on photo; and Atomic freeski team manager Dominic "Gentile" Tritscher, visiting from Austria. Atomic pro Tim Durtschi also stopped by to join in on the fun. Our...

From Russia with Love

  • February 15, 2014

Hey everyone, Greetings from Sochi, Russia where I'm currently on assignment for the ski website Newschoolers.com to cover the freeskiing events, halfpipe and slopestyle, that are debuting at the XXII Olympic Winter Games. Needless to say it's been quite a ride so far! I've been having a blast getting into the Olympic spirit and learning as much as I can about this area, the people, and of course about the competitions and the skiers skiing in them. I'll be providing regular reports not only about the freeskiing events, but also about the experience of these Russian Games. Here are a few links...

Crevasse Gap with Tommy & Josh

  • July 23, 2013

Last week I got a picture text from Tommy E with a photo of a huge crevasse up on Hood with a jump carved out above it. Needless to say I was up there the next day, hiking far out into the canyon (and wishing I had more adequate gear for glacier travel) to check out the setup. Tommy and Josh Larkin had built a pretty gnarly gap over a huge chasm filled with chunks of ice. The stakes were high, but Josh and Tommy kept their wits about them, sending the gap several times as me and Richard Hallman got the shot. It was another one of those days in the backcountry where the vibe becomes...

Meanwhile at Mt. Hood #1 and #2

  • July 18, 2013

Meanwhile at Mt. Hood #2 from Ethan Stone on Vimeo. After a few false starts, I've started telling some of the summertime stories (there are many of them) from on and around the slopes of Mt. Hood. Powder Magazine was nice enough to offer me a column on their website for the purpose, so I've been supplying them with regular installments of text, photos and video called "Meanwhile at Mt. Hood." Here are the first and second posts from the Oregon summer scene - enjoy!

Jump Builder: The Tommy Ellingson Profile

  • July 18, 2013

I just finished up a feature profile on my good friend Tommy Ellingson for the ESPN Freeskiing blog. This was one of the more challenging pieces that I've ever written, and I spent a lot of time dwelling on each sentence and paragraph. Writing a profile on someone is a big responsibility; it's your job to represent this person to the world, and whatever you write, for better or for worse, will become a part of that person's legacy. For my part, I figured that if I could represent about one quarter of the awesomeness of Tommy E, I'd be off to a good start.

2013 Nine Knights

  • April 24, 2013

The 2013 Nine Knights presented a one-of-a-kind, never-before-conceived feature to the snow world. Twin 75-foot kickets, a 30-foot quarterpipe, dual halfpipes dropping off the sides of the feature... this was something you have to see to believe. It was my good fortune to be a part of the crew to build and maintain this incredible feature. Here's a behind-the-scenes story on what went down for the ski website Newschoolers, as well as a review of the big air event that was not to be, and a "Building Nine Knights" photo gallery for the ESPN Freeskiing Blog.

Nine Queens

  • March 18, 2013

For the second year I got to help build and maintain the feature for the Nine Queens women's event in Serfaus, Austria. I spent a week laboring with the awesome crew from Schneestern to realize this incredible feature, then another two weeks keeping it well-maintained for the world's best female freeskiers. In my spare time I reported on the event for the ESPN freeskiing blog - here's the story.

Red Bull Playstreets

  • February 26, 2013

Here's an article I wrote for Freeskier magazine about Red Bull Playstreets, an innovative and hectic slopestyle event with perhaps the world's only "in-city slopestyle" built straight through the hillside resort town of Bad Gastein, Austria.
